Winter Driving Tips Days Fordstore

The cold weather has arrived, and with it comes the need for a different set of driving skills. As the landscape transforms and the temperature drops, it's crucial to adapt your approach to the road. Whether you're a seasoned driver or someone facing their first winter behind the wheel, this blog post is your essential guide to safe and confident winter driving. We'll explore a series of practical tips and expert advice to help you navigate the frosty challenges that lie ahead. So, grab a warm cup of cocoa, sit back, and prepare to master the art of winter driving.

1. Preparation

When you have a journey planned, make sure you allocate extra time to be able to take your time and be cautious. Before heading off be sure to check your windscreen wipers, tyre condition and essential fluids. Your screenwash can get frozen in the colder months so we recommend using a quality screenwash that is effective down to -20C. If you find your screenwash bottle is already frozen, you can try adding warm (not hot) water to thaw the solution. If your washer jets have frozen, just wait for your car to warm up enough for them to thaw again. Take some time to consider your journey and make sure you are taking the safest route to your destination. If the weather is icy plan your route through the main roads, these are more likely to have been gritted. Make sure you put your vehicle lights on and that you have enough fuel to get where you need to go.

2. Drive carefully, be mindful.

Make sure you keep a good distance from other vehicles and apply your brakes gently. When driving down hills, try to stay in a low gear and use your brakes as little as possible.

3. If you get stuck in snowy or icy conditions;

Straighten up your steering and clear the snow from around the wheels. Put a sack or old rug in front of your driving wheels to give the tyres grip.

4. If you skid;

If you find yourself skidding, take your foot off the accelerator and make sure the wheels are pointing where you want to go. Steer gently into the skid - For example, If the vehicle is sliding to the right - steer to the right. Don't take your hands off the wheel or stamp on the brakes.
